Sikh Advocacy in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Era

During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sikh advocacy took on a new level of importance, especially in the context of the Sikh diaspora.

Ranjit Singh’s rule saw the rise of Sikh power and influence, and he actively promoted the interests of the Sikh community, both within his empire and in other parts of the world.

Promotion of Sikh Identity

Under Ranjit Singh’s leadership, efforts were made to promote and preserve Sikh identity within the diaspora.

This included advocating for the construction of gurdwaras in various countries where Sikhs had settled.

For example, the Gurdwara Sahib in Singapore, built in 1912, was a result of the advocacy and support from the Sikh community, which sought to maintain their religious and cultural identity in a foreign land.

Advocacy for Religious and Cultural Rights

Ranjit Singh’s era saw advocacy for the religious and cultural rights of Sikhs living outside of the Punjab region.

The Sikh community actively worked to ensure that Sikh practices, traditions, and language were preserved in the diaspora.

For instance, the establishment of Sikh educational institutions in countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada was a result of advocacy efforts. This helped maintain and promote Sikh culture and language among the diaspora youth.

Fight Against Discrimination

Sikh advocacy during Ranjit Singh’s era also involved fighting against discrimination and prejudice faced by Sikhs in the diaspora.

The Sikh community worked to raise awareness about their faith and traditions and to combat misconceptions and stereotypes.

For example, the advocacy efforts of the Sikh community in North America led to the recognition of the Sikh turban as a religious symbol and the accommodation of Sikh religious practices in various spheres of public life.

Legacy and Continued Advocacy

Ranjit Singh’s support for Sikh advocacy in the diaspora had a lasting impact on the global Sikh community.
